When either LOPS or PAD is present

Screen a person with diabetes at risk of foot ulceration for:

  • history of foot ulceration or lower-extremity amputation

  • diagnosis of end-stage renal disease (ESRD)

  • presence or progression of foot deformity

  • limited joint mobility

  • abundant callus

  • any pre-ulcerative sign on the foot

Determine foot screening requirements

More extensive and more frequent foot examination is needed, as the ulcer risk is higher. Based on the ulcer risk and characteristics identified, determine IWGDF risk level and screening requirements.

  • Low risk

  • Moderate risk

  • High risk

For a person with diabetes who is at risk of foot ulceration (IWGDF risk 1-3), structured education and treatments are also essential components.
